AIR Awards 2013 Performers Announced With Violent Soho, Big Scary & More
Date of News: 2013-08-29
[Source: ToneDeaf.com.au] Following on from announcing a new sponsorship deal with Carlton Dry to present the 2013 edition of the annual ceremony, and setting the date for their night of nights, the Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR) now announces the performers for the eighth annual Carlton Dry Independent Music Awards.
Delivering performances at this year’s AIR Awards, to be held on Wednesday 9th October at Melbourne’s Revolt art space, is an impressive lineup that showcases some of the Australian indie music sector’s finest talent.
First up, is ’Mansfield 4 Ever’ four-piece Violent Soho. Set to drop their highly anticipated Hungry Ghost album in a matter of days, Violent Soho will bring their trademark riffage and frontman Luke Boerdam’s impassioned wail to the Carlton Dry Independent Music Awards stage ahead of embarking on a national tour to support their third studio album, racking up their impressive tally of over 250 gigs in a year.
Previous AIR award nominees, Melbourne indie twosome Big Scary will also be on hand to perform at the event, presumably performing a selection from their excellent second studio album Not Art; released through the band’s own indie label Pieater (distributed by Inertia), it’s won the band critical acclaim, engineered an international deal with Seattle indie label Barsuk, and was recently shortlisted for the coveted Australian Music Prize.
Last year’s AIR Awards saw a performance from Paul Kelly bring a legendary touch to proceedings, this year that role is brilliantly fulfilled by celebrated Indigenous singer-songwriter Archie Roach. It’s been a winning 12 months for the beloved Aborginal musician since the release of Into The Bloodstream last October, his first album since 2009, and once the AIR Awards 2013 Ceremony is over, he may well have a few more additions to the trophy cabinet to add to his three NIMA Awards he recently claimed.
Three acts from Melbourne will be rounding out the rest of the live music performances at the AIR Awards this year. Namely dance provocateurs RÜFÜS, who have started parties across multiple sell out shows in Australia, New York and even Moscow, who will no doubt be performing a tune from their recently released debut album, Atlas.
Melbourne’s soul-certified collective, Saskwatch, will provide a superbly funk addition to the AIR Awards, having slinked up ever higher peaks since the release of their debut album Leave It All Behind last year, and with one of the city’s – if not the country’s – most electrifying, feel-good live shows.
Last but not least is everyman MC Seth Sentry, who has become a regular of the Australian festival circuit, including slots at Breath Of Life, Fat As Butter, Come Together, Sprung, Big Day Out, and Groovin The Moo. The Aussie hip hop sensation’s This Was Tomorrow has also earned him an historic performance on US late-night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live.
The Carlton Dry Independent Music Awards will be held on Wednesday 9th October at the Revolt art space in Kensington, Melbourne (for the third year running) and will once again celebrate the achievements of the Australian indie artists, labels, and industry based on votes from online media, music press, broadcasters, and others from the indie music sector.
With that kind of musical lineup, this year’s 8th Annual Carlton Dry Independent Music Awards is sure to be as winningly entertaining as last year’s event. Further announcements from AIR about this year’s awards, list of nominations, and guest presenters are still on the way, along with a new award category formed with new sponsorship partners, Carlton Dry.
